Start with the problem, not the prompt

An app starts long before the first screen. It starts with someone trying to get something done: track an order, book a session, organize a project, or find the right answer. Base44 brings the interface and the services behind an application into one building environment. You describe what you need, then refine the result through conversation.

That does not remove the need for clear thinking. It makes clear thinking more valuable. A precise description of a small, useful workflow usually gets you further than a long list of disconnected features.

Understand the three building blocks

Think of an application as three connected layers.

  1. The interface: the screens, forms, navigation, and feedback people interact with.
  2. The data: the records the app remembers, such as tasks, products, or bookings.
  3. The behavior: what happens when someone takes an action, including validation, saving, and permissions.

A beautiful screen is only one part of a working product. When you build a booking form, you also need to decide where a booking is stored, who can see it, and what confirms that it worked.

Write a better first brief

Start with one person, one job, and one outcome. Instead of “build a project management platform,” try a brief that describes a specific day at work.

Build a shared task tracker for a small design studio. The team needs to add tasks, assign an owner, set a due date, and mark work complete. Start with a focused task list and a simple form. Save every change and show clear feedback.

This brief establishes the audience, primary workflow, important data, and definition of success. It leaves room to make sensible design decisions without making the product ambiguous.

Build in short, complete loops

First, get the core journey working. Add a task. Find it again. Edit it. Complete it. Refresh and confirm the change remains. Only then add secondary features.

For each iteration, describe the exact change you want and name what should stay unchanged. “Improve the task form” is less useful than “Group the title and description together, keep the due date optional, and preserve the existing save behavior.”

Make a habit of testing empty states and mistakes as well as the happy path. A form that works with perfect input is not yet a finished form.

Know what to review before launch

Review who can read and change each type of record. Keeping a button out of sight is not the same as restricting access to the data behind it. Check the experience on a real phone, verify navigation and error messages, and make sure any external connection has the right permissions.

Your first goal is not a huge application. It is a small, complete experience that you understand well enough to improve.

Your next step

Write a one-paragraph brief for the app you wish existed. Pick its most important workflow and build that first. Use the app planning prompt to organize your thinking, then explore the Master Base44 preview for a guided introduction.

This is an independent introductory guide, not official Base44 documentation. Product details can change; verify current behavior before a production launch.
